Tesla Powerwall 3 Backwards Compatibility: Now in Beta Testing
Expanding Your Solar Storage with SolarHub
For a long time, the energy sector believed that the Tesla Powerwall 3 would operate in a completely isolated ecosystem from previous generations.
Tesla has just announced a major shift that changes the outlook for homeowners looking to expand. A significant software update is currently in development to enable official Tesla Powerwall 3 backwards compatibility. Once this firmware is released, you will be able to link a brand new Powerwall 3 directly into an existing Powerwall 2 setup.
As SolarHub operates across various networks in NSW and the ACT, we are now preparing system designs that align with the specific grid rules of your local area.

What This Means for Powerwall 2 Owners
For those with an existing Powerwall 2, this development introduces a level of flexibility that was previously unavailable. While the official software release is still on the horizon, here is the essential breakdown of what to expect for your home:

Regional Design Considerations
Depending on where you live and your property connection, the way we add a Powerwall 3 to your home will vary.
System Compatibility and Local Limits
While the new software enables different generations to work together, there are specific hardware and regional rules that determine if your home is eligible for an upgrade.

The $750 Tesla Cashback - For quotes accepted before June 30th 2026
Tesla is currently offering a $750 cashback for customers expanding their systems. To secure this, please keep the following in mind:

Case Study
From 40 kWh to 67.5 kWh: Regional NSW, May 2026
In May 2026, as part of a controlled beta programme with Tesla, SolarHub completed a 3x Powerwall 2 plus Powerwall 3 installation at a property in regional NSW near Canberra. A homeowner who had been building their energy system since 2017 came to us wanting to go further, with two new electric vehicles and a desire to reach near-zero electricity costs were the trigger.

The system after upgrade
Their projected electricity costs are now near zero, even with two EVs charging regularly.
As one of Tesla’s selected beta test sites, SolarHub worked closely with Tesla to complete and validate this configuration. The two-phase connection required careful grid design to ensure compliant backup coverage across both circuits. Backward compatibility matters; when customers build a system over time, they should be able to keep building on it rather than start over. With close to 2,000 Tesla products installed across our network, we are well placed to assess whether a similar upgrade is possible for your home.
