NSW Battery Rebate Guide | SolarHub

Your Guide to the new NSW Battery Rebate

Empowering South Coast homes and NSW homes near Canberra to embrace solar power and battery storage affordably

In the next few weeks, The NSW Government will offer a new incentive to help households and businesses afford solar batteries.

This is a significant step towards making batteries more popular in NSW. It can be seen as a game changer, because batteries have reduced in price, the feed in tariff is getting lower, the grid reliability is getting worse and there is now a battery rebate available for the 1st time across all of NSW. All these elements make the move towards a home storage battery more attractive.

SolarHub was one of the first home storage battery experts in the ACT over a decade ago and has since that time installed over 3,000 solar batteries from Tesla to SolarEdge, Enphase, and many other quality battery brands.

SolarHub now brings this expertise to NSW where we have branches on the South Coast, in Bega and Batemans Bay. We can also service regional NSW such as Goulburn, Queanbeyan, Bungendore, and Yass from our main branch in Canberra.

Did you know SolarHub can already offer a battery discount in NSW?

While we await the arrival of this new NSW Battery Rebate, you should know that SolarHub has been offering its own battery discount in NSW through the Smart Distributed Batteries Project. This project is supported by funding from the NSW Government and the discount, worth $4,950 on a Tesla Powerwall 2 installation, is available now.

We are about halfway through the project of creating a 6MW Virtual Power Plant, and these discounts are offered in limited quantities, so don’t wait and request a quote now to take advantage of this existing, SolarHub-exclusive NSW Government battery rebate.

What is the NSW Home Battery Rebate?

The NSW Battery Rebate is a financial incentive designed to bring down the upfront cost of solar batteries. These batteries store excess solar energy generated during the day for use at night or during cloudy periods, maximising your self-reliance and reducing your electricity bills. Batteries can also be used to provide power to certain appliances during a blackout (some additional charges may apply for backup function). Batteries can also offer services to the grid through a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), further supporting the grid with renewable energy.

Benefits of the Rebate

  • Support the creation of a more reliable grid in NSW.
  • Lower electricity bills by using stored solar energy at night.
  • Protect your home from unexpected blackouts.
  • Save between $1,600 and up to $2,400 on the upfront cost of a solar battery (for existing solar systems).
  • Earn an additional $250-$400 for connecting your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), with the opportunity to claim this again after three years.
  • Gain greater energy independence and reduce reliance on the grid.
  • Avoid low paying Feed-in Tariffs and instead use your own renewable energy when you need it.

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A VPP is a network of distributed energy resources, such as solar panels and battery storage systems installed in homes and businesses, that are collectively managed by a central operator. This system allows these individual units to act as a single power plant, quickly providing renewable energy to the grid when demand is high.

Per example, a VPP can quickly stabilise grid frequency if there is an unexpected fluctuation of power on the grid because of an underperforming traditional power plant.

Is the NSW battery rebate right for You?

The NSW Battery Rebate is a great opportunity for homeowners and businesses who already have a solar system installed. Obviously the system needs to be of a sufficient size and produce enough excess energy to support a battery.

In some instances, it might be advisable to invest in a new battery and additional solar combo, taking advantage of the Federal solar and the separate NSW battery rebate.

After a thorough analysis of your system production and power bills, a SolarHub energy consultant can offer a precise proposal to maximise your home’s solar production and financial return on a battery investment.

Here are some factors to consider which might make a battery worthwhile:

  • Are you looking to lower your electricity bills permanently?
  • Do you want to reduce your reliance on the energy retailers & the grid?
  • Do you have enough rooftop space for a solar system big enough to support a solar battery?

What to do now?

The NSW Battery Rebate is launching in the next few weeks, and final dates and details will be announced shortly. We suggest monitoring the relevant NSW Gov website, for the latest updates.

Here is a quick summary of the website content:

  • The NSW government is offering rebates to encourage residents to install batteries.
  • SolarHub can already offer a $4,950 discount on battery installations in NSW through the Smart Distributed Batteries Project.
  • Batteries will help the electricity grid be more stable and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • To be eligible for the rebates, homeowners must install solar panels or already have an appropriate solar system and use an approved supplier.
  • The incentive is not a direct payment to the customer, but rather a discount provided by the installer.

We will provide updates on this webpage once we know more about the NSW battery rebate.
