FAQs
The postcode 2515 electrification project is a transformative initiative aimed at modernising the Illawarra region’s energy infrastructure. By integrating advanced solar energy systems, home batteries, and electrification technologies, the project seeks to create a pilot to demonstrate how a suburb can transform its power consumption footprint.
This means transitioning homes and businesses away from reliance on traditional energy sources such as gas and coal via coal-fired electricity and creating a community powered by more renewable options.
Solar panels and reliable battery storage systems will be at the core of the initiative, providing residents with reliable energy that reduces carbon emissions and lowers electricity bills. With tailored solutions designed specifically for the 2515 area, the project addresses local energy demands while paving the way for a smarter, reliable grid. It’s a step of learning – so that other regions can benefit from the implementation of this pilot project. Solarhub Wollongong is very proud to support this project.
The electrification project is designed to benefit everyone in postcode 2515—residents, businesses, and the environment alike.
For homeowners, it introduces access to cost-saving solar energy systems and home batteries, enabling significant reductions in electricity bills.
Business owners can also harness solar power and batteries to operate more efficiently and reduce daily running costs. Community-wide, the project enhances energy reliability, reduces the risk of outages, and lessens the area’s dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
The 2515 electrification project will be rolled out in stages to ensure a smooth transition for the community. The first phase, focusing on installing solar panels, home battery systems, and other electrifying your home upgrades, starts in December 2024 and concludes in April 2026. The research component, being phase 2, will continue until April 2027 to analyse the outcomes and gather insights.
The electrification project will bring significant improvements to participants’ homes or businesses while involving minimal disruption during the transition.
Homes will gain access to high-performance solar panels and home battery systems, installed by local suppliers, such as Solarhub Wollongong, which can drastically reduce electricity bills and provide backup power during outages.
Small businesses, meanwhile, can benefit from energy-efficient systems designed to cut costs and boost operational sustainability.
The project focuses on introducing cutting-edge solar power systems, advanced home battery storage, and smart electrification solutions across the 2515 postcode area. The 2515 postcode covers the suburbs of Austimer, Clifton, Coledale, Scarborough, Thirroul and Wombarr, which are all part of the Wollongong LGA.
Solar PV systems, home battery storage systems will ensure that excess solar energy is saved for use during the night or power outages, maximising efficiency and reliability.
In homes, heat pumps will take the place of gas boilers, while induction stoves will replace gas cooktops. The goal is to fully electrify households, enabling them to shift away from gas reliance. With solar panels generating clean energy and batteries storing excess power, households can optimise their energy use, achieving maximum self-consumption and reducing dependency on the grid.
Additionally, upgrades to the local grid will enable better integration of renewable energy and prepare for future electrification needs, such as electric vehicle charging stations. These systems work together to create a robust, clean energy ecosystem that benefits everyone in postcode 2515 for decades.

As of December 1, 2024, the 2515 postcode area has seen over 1,879 small-scale solar PV arrays installed, since 2006. These installations will soon see over 500 new systems added and right now they contribute a combined solar in kW capacity of 10,856 kW, averaging 990 watts per person, slightly below the Australian average of 1,045 watts per person.
With approximately 4,650 homes and buildings in the postcode area this equates to 40.40% of solar systems already in the system. At the conclusion of the electrification program and with normal solar systems added over the next year, the % of solar on the roofs of postcode 2515 will be over 52%. This is much higher than the average nationally of 39% of roofs with solar.
Obviously since installation some solar systems have degraded or broken down, but in general all these solar systems in postcode 2515 generate on average per annum each day over 39 MW of energy. If we assume a daily average consumption of 25 kW for Wollongong homes, this means close to the equivalent of 1600 homes can solely rely on solar energy. If we value all this generated power at 38 cents per kWh the value of all this local generated electricity per annum over $5.4 million dollars.
